VIEUX-BOUCAU (which means old river mouth), once called PORT D’ALBRET, was the first coastal port in the Landes, at the mouth of the Adour river.

The river was redirected in 1578 to create its current estuary in Bayonne. The large natural areas are unspoilt between the dunes and the forest.  The holiday resort of PORT D’ALBRET is a friendly-size resort built around a 60 hectare (140 acre) saltwater lake.

It can be reached via the “Mail”, a superb flowered footpath, the resort’s crown jewel. Boats and pedal boats can dock on the wooded island in the middle of the saltwater lake. Fisherman cast their lines off the magnificent wooden boom. For more info...

The Soustons lake can be reached by canoe or kayak by following the flow of Vieux-Boucau’s current. There’s plenty to see and do: cycle lanes between the sea and forest, marked walking paths, tennis, horse riding, golf, fishing, monitored swimming in the ocean or saltwater lake, and surfing. Spain and the Basque Country are close by with other new and interesting cultures to discover.
